Northern Virginia (the one that is connected :-) is liberal; it is rural Virginia that is heavily conservative...

recently, population of Northern Virginia grew noticably and there is a clear urban development trend which by some estimates contributed to electing a democratic governor (however moderate) and getting 46% (or something close to that) vote for Kerry this year.

А вы за Ричмонд выезжали? На первой же заправке "У вас акцент! Вы откуда? Иностранка? А подержаться можно?" Вирджиния, она большая и исторически конфедератская.

There are reasons NRA is based over there. Until recently when hi-tech and IT consulting firms working with Federal agencies @ DC (and, to extent, Virginia State @ Richmond) started attracting liberal (e.g., educated) workforce and make them populate Northern Virginia, it has been always heavily conservative state. Even now, the "type" of people voting for Democrats in DC (black unemployed folks) шы quite different from that in Virginia (East-Cost liberals, ex-emigrants, etc.).
