That GrandCentral is a Vonage competitor -- this is just the same kind of VOIP service.

GrandCentral does have LOTS of better features.

For example, it lets you setup call forwarding lists based on the caller id. So Lucy's relatives would first get routed to her cell phone and then to mine as a backup. My relatives would be routed to my cell first. Etc.

What about call handoff (they call it Call Switch)? It is putting a call on hold and then forwarding the existing call to another phone number (and freeing up your phone line).

Vonage has no way to listen to your VM is realtime (while it is being left) and having an option to interrupt the VM and pick up the phone. People used to do this with actual VM machines, and now they can with GrandCentral.

Ditto for recording the conversation and storing it on their server. Legality-wise, this is the same as me pressing "record" button on my cell phone during the call (lots of phones let you do this). Some states have a law that both parties should agree to have their conversation recorded. It is up to you to comply with the law and not press the "record" button before getting the other person's ok.

There is one great feature that Vonage has, and I cannot find on GrandCentral -- V-Access! Ie. local phone numbers in many area codes and a few foreign countries that let people dial them, then your number, and get thereby call you by paying only their local rates.

Well, Lucy has omitted a key piece of information from her post. (I hope she realizes that.) That service is just like Vonage -- you get a phone number and PAY GrandCentral monthly or yearly for it. You could also get a VOIP gateway box (just like Vonage provides) and plug your phone into it (or, rather, like we have, just connect your entire house phone wiring to it).

It is the same kind of VOIP service.

uhm. No!

It's not VOIP at all. They don't provide a phone service -- you have to supply your own, at least one line/cell phone/etc.

You also don't pay (at least for now) -- it's free. I sent you information with our number, go look at it some more :).

Ok, in this case they are less than a VOIP -- they do everything a VOIP company does:
Contract a CLEC for a phone number, route calls, operate voicemail, etc. But they just do not operate a VOIP server and do not send out VOIP gateways *for now*.

Also, if you read their terms-of-service, you'll see that they specify that there will be monthly or annual fees, etc. They have real expenses, at least, they pay fees for each phone number they lease from a CLEC.

So, once you give out your number to everyone, they'll levy fees on you. Also, I would be rather hesitant to use the number they assigned as a "permanent" number, because you CANNOT port it anywhere. Instead, it is better to use a number assigned to you by a landline or a cell company and port it to anyone you want. That way, you can always take it with you.

sure. I'm not planning on giving it out as a permanent number. But it won't hurt to use it for something if we decide it's useful.
